Generator Permits and Utilities in Edmond

Who may do the work, which permits apply, and why your electric provider matters. Rules change, so confirm with the city before you start.

The Homeowner Exception Doesn’t Apply

In many Oklahoma cities a homeowner can pull a permit for electrical work on their own home. Edmond is different. Its City of Edmond Building & Safety FAQ states that a local code amendment does not allow a homeowner to install any permanent wiring or electrical equipment. Only a state-licensed electrical contractor registered in Edmond, or their licensed representative, may do that work. The only exceptions listed are swapping receptacles, switches or similar light fixtures without new wiring.

Inspections

Expect the city to inspect the electrical connection and the gas work before the system is put into service. Ask your contractor which inspections apply and to share the results. Keep the permit card with your house records, because buyers and insurers increasingly ask about generator permits.

Which Utility Do You Have?

The utility matters if the installer needs a meter pulled or a service disconnected during the work. Your installer coordinates that, but tell them which provider you have.

HOA Approval

Many Edmond subdivisions require HOA approval for outdoor equipment. Get it in writing before the pad goes in. The city permit and HOA approval are separate.

Verify Before You Sign

Ask for the contractor’s Oklahoma electrical license number and confirm it with the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board. Ask whether the company is registered with Edmond.
