October 2020
A late-October ice storm hit while trees still had their leaves, and branches came down on lines all over the metro. About 615,000 Oklahomans lost power, including about 445,000 OG&E customers, nearly 60% of the utility’s Oklahoma customers. OG&E reported restoration complete on November 10, 2020, more than two weeks after the storm began, for customers able to receive power (OKCFox; KFOR). Some homes needed an electrician to repair damaged service equipment before they could be reconnected.

A City of Mixed Ages
Oklahoma City’s median home was built in 1982, with about 47% of homes built before 1980 and about 31% since 2000 (U.S. Census ACS 2020–2024). That spread means two very different projects:
| Older core neighborhoods | Newer north and west subdivisions |
|---|---|
| Smaller or full panels, possible upgrade first | 200-amp service with room for a transfer switch |
| Narrow lots, tight placement | HOA approval and screening |
| Gas-heated, so smaller loads | Two HVAC systems, larger loads |
Permits in OKC
Oklahoma City has its own development services and permit process, separate from Edmond’s. Your installer should pull the electrical and gas permits there. Ask to see them.
Ice-Storm Specifics
- Put a cold-weather kit on the list if the unit will sit in the open.
- Plan for heat: a gas furnace needs only blower power, but heat pumps need careful planning (see load management).
- Keep the area around the unit clear of limbs that could fall on it.
