Old Houses, Old Service
Census estimates show that about 69% of Guthrie homes were built before 1980, and about 19% before 1940. The median build year is 1970 (U.S. Census ACS 2020–2024). Before a generator goes in, an electrician will often look at:
- The size and condition of the electrical service and panel
- Any older wiring still in use
- Whether the house has room for a transfer switch near the panel
Expect some of these to appear as separate items on a quote.
Historic District Considerations
Guthrie’s historic core is a nationally recognized historic district, and the city has historic preservation review for some exterior changes. If you live in the district, ask the city before installing a visible outdoor unit. Placing it at the back or side of the house and screening it may help.
Rural Logan County
Outside town, homes are more likely to be on propane and on a rural electric cooperative. The Central Rural Electric Cooperative lists Logan County in its service area. Two things to plan for:
- Tank size. Longer distances can mean slower fuel delivery after a storm. Size the tank for the longest outage you want to ride out. See gas vs. propane.
- Well pump. If you rely on a well, the pump must be on the generator, and its starting surge affects sizing.
Permits
Guthrie runs its own permits. In unincorporated Logan County, ask your installer which authority applies. Either way the electrical work should be done by a licensed electrician.
Costs
